Fitness Is a Healthy and Fun Way to Bond with Kids

Each night after dinner, our kids choose an activity for all of us to do together. Usually it's a creative art project, a vigorous game of Ping Pong or a power walk around the neighborhood. Because we all feel so energized after our walks, they are becoming increasingly popular – even in inclement weather. Our kids not only happily endure the exercise, they usually don't want to stop. What's the secret to their feeling good about fitness? Making it fun!
Preparation is key: We arm them with the right clothes, shoes and accessories. Each one gets to carry their own flashlight, which makes it fun for them as they search the night for interesting sights. We talk about things we see along the way and they take turns holding Cody's leash (she's our Labrador retriever). The kids also enjoy a weekly martial arts class while Mom and Dad work out.
We're in good company when it comes to family fitness. There is a strong movement toward family health, driven in part by parents who experienced the long-term trend of individual fitness ignited in the 1980s. But statistics show the reality of why it's vital that we get moving: The American Obesity Association reports that more than 30 percent of children are overweight – the result of poor food choices, sedentary lifestyles and improper nutrition. Because of this, parents are taking steps to live healthier lifestyles with their kids.
"Physical activity is an important part of your child's life; it has a tremendous impact on physical, intellectual and emotional development," according to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. "As adults, we have a responsibility to be role models for our children, sharing with them the pleasures and benefits of a physically active lifestyle. Developing a love of sports and a habit of regular physical activity as a child can be the foundation for a long, healthy life."
Aside from walking, what else can you do to encourage family fitness? Here are a few suggestions:
- Shovel snow – If you buy kid-sized snow shovels, kids will have a ball and not even know they're exercising.
- Play sports – Introduce children to team and individual sports and see which ones they like.
- Dance – Whether it's instruction in ballet or jazz or just casual fun in your own home, dancing is a fun way to work out.
- Swim – This is an enjoyable activity that can be done year-round.
- Sign up for a class – Take gymnastics, martial arts or even skating.
- Go bowling – It's a fun thing to do and a workout, too.
- Play at the park – Climbing and running around are great for your health.
- Employ the TV – Buy a kids' yoga or family fitness video and get moving!
As the weather warms up, plan to:
- Work in your garden.
- Ride bikes.
- Jump rope.
- Hula-hoop!
Before you know it, fitness will become an integral part of your family's life, offering you a healthy and fun way to bond with your children.
