Dental Care During Pregnancy

Hormonal changes during pregnancy affect expectant mothers in many ways. Consider how these hormonal changes affect your mouth. Increased levels of estrogen make teeth and gums vulnerable and susceptible to certain conditions. These hormonal changes can influence your oral health and necessitate dental treatment.

Should I See My Dentist Before I Get Pregnant?
Good dental care prior to and during pregnancy is vital for your continued good health and the health of your baby. If a woman is planning on becoming pregnant, dental professionals agree it is a good idea to make an appointment to see a dentist, especially if it has been more than six months since your last visit. The dentist will be able to let you know not only how healthy your gums and teeth are, but if there are any potential problems that need to be taken care of before you become pregnant.

Dr. Dan E. Peterson, a dentist at the Family Gentle Dental Care in Gering, Neb., advises his patients who are planning a pregnancy to take a good look at the care they give to their teeth. "I tell them if they do not have good dental health, they can transmit cavity-causing organisms known as streptococci to their babies," he says. "These organisms are responsible for causing tooth decay. Research has shown that by brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing at least once a day to disrupt bacteria growth between your teeth and using an alcohol- and sugar-free mouth rinse with an antibacterial agent you can suppress or reduce the bacteria which cause tooth decay."

Regular Dental Checkups During Pregnancy
If you are already pregnant, regular dental visits are essential, especially since a mom-to-be is providing the nutrients for the growth and health of her unborn baby.
